9AM. Looks at weather app. 40% chance of rain. "We might be good today."
12PM. Looks at weather app. 50% chance of rain. "We still might be good today."
3PM. On the phone with Commissioner Ken Stevens. "Games on."
3:15PM. Vendors start calling. "Miguel, ¿tenemos juegos hoy?" Me: "Sí, parece que la lluvia va a aguantar."
6PM. Scheduled tipoff of HS game. Staff, summer youth, both teams, and referees are at the park. Phone now says 70% chance of rain.
6:15PM. Light rain begins. Then stops. Then starts again. "Send the word out — games are cancelled."
This is summer basketball in a nutshell. Sometimes we call off games and nothing happens and we regret it. Sometimes we decide to play ball, it rains, and we regret not calling it off sooner. Tomorrow is another day.
In other news, Team Dyckman picked up a big win over Watson — at Watson — in NYvsNY yesterday! Guard Josh Charlot made the game-winning layup with 3.4 seconds remaining to spoil the homecoming.
